It’s time for the big winter storm and many are running to get supplies such as food, water, flashlights, and batteries. But it will be important to make sure that if your power is out that you are stocked with lots of fun things to do. There is nothing worse than sitting in the dark and being bored. Here are some suggestions for things to do in a power outage:
Using your Ipads and Computers – Let’s get this topic out of the way. The truth is that everyone will start off by using up their I-pad and computer batteries and back-up batteries. This is a valid way to have fun in a power outage. But when you run out of battery power…
Play Board Games – There are so many fun and exciting board games. Parchisi, Monopoly, Scrabble are some of my favorites. But sit around the table and have some fun. Pie Face anyone?
Play Cards – Might as well have a deck of cards ready to go. You can never go wrong with a game of Old Maid, Go Fish, or War.
Read a book – this almost seams retro but it isn’t. Many people still read and you don’t need your I-Pad to do it. Pick up a paper book, remember those? Read it.
Cook – If you have a gas stove, you don’t need electricity to turn it on. Create an exciting stir fry or just make franks and beans. The possibilities are endless as long as you remembered to get food at the grocery store.
Create Shadow Puppets – this is great for the kids. If you have your flashlights going and have plenty of batteries to spare, spend some time putting on a shadow puppet show. Bunnies are always the easiest to create. See what other animals and creations you can do using your hand and its shadow.
Sleep – Let’s face it. Some people love sleeping. Curl under a warm blanket and get some ZZZZZs. Hopefully the power will be back on when you wake up.
Play Marco Polo – This game requires a person to be the Finder. Everyone else goes and hides in the darkness. The finder screams Marco. Everyone hiding screams Polo. Using the sense of hearing the finder goes to find everyone. The finder wins if they find everyone hiding.
Color with Crayons – This has become a very relaxing past time even for adults nowadays. You may not get to see the full extent of your colorful work of art until the power goes back on or you can use a flashlight to take a quick peak at how good of an artist you are.
Play Mad libs – Using Madlibs can be a ton of fun. Especially if you come up with some goofy storylines. Madlibs allows you to fill in the word blanks of sentences that correspond to a story. Depending on your word choices everyone may be laughing up a storm of their own.
Despite losing power during a storm, there are still many ways to have fun and pass the time. Do you have any other suggestions?
