Last year I heard about new Virtual Reality games being developed. The two companies generating the most buzz has been HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift.
Today, I was fortunate enough to get a 15 minute session at Best Buy to give the Oculus Rift a try. And I was amazed. The VR technology is going to change the landscape of gaming.
The presentation started with being able to interact with several different environments that included a zen garden, outdoors with animals, a cutesy alien, a large city landscape, as well as a T-Rex running at me. The worlds created by Oculus were extravagant. I thought I could touch the alien. I peaked downward from the outcrop of a skyscraper to see how high up I was. Every direction I looked I could see an electric and beautiful world.
After getting to experience the several different scenes, I was able to play a rock climbing game. The controls, using an X Box one joystick, were familiar to me but didn’t add to the experience as I wanted to use my hands to grab and not hit a button. The climbing game wasn’t perfect, but the excitement of Oculus Rift and what I had just seen was.
I can only imagine the types of games that will be coming out on these Virtual Reality systems in the next 10-20 years. The Oculus Rift currently has 30 games and Oculus is anticipating to have 100 by the end of the year. Their handsets are also due to come out by the end of the year to replace the X Box joystick. If you haven’t checked out the Oculus Rift, you should find the closest Best Buy to you and enjoy the experience. The Virtual Reality that many of us thought would never come, is finally here!
